Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the games have been postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021. However, their official name remains 2020 Summer Olympics. Men’s teams are restricted to under-24 players (born on or after 1 January 1997) with a maximum of three overage players allowed. The men’s tournament is typically restricted to under-23 players, though following the postponement of the Olympics by a year, FIFA decided to maintain the restriction of players born on or after 1 January 1997. In June 2020, FIFA approved the use of the video assistant referee (VAR) system at the Olympics. A total of 16 teams will be divided into four groups in the first round. Each team play others once. The top two teams in the group will advance to the quarter-finals. (If there is a tie, it will be broken by goal difference, goal, head-to-head result and head-to-head goal difference) The quarter-final, semi-final, third-place match and final are single-legged. If tied, extra time will be played (15 minutes each for first and second half) with a penalty shoot-out followed if needed. If the third-place match and the final are played together, a penalty shoot-out will decide the winner if there is a tie after 90 minutes.
